Kaye Kittrell
— the actress, artist and photographer — has followed
an eclectic career path, from her rural Tennessee roots, to the corridors
of power in Washington DC, the bright lights of television and theater
in New York and the glamour of Los Angeles. Creativity runs in her
veins. “I knew from the time I was five that I would be an artist
of some kind,” says Kaye. “My mother was always profoundly
creative and that rubbed off on me.”
She
received an art degree from the University of Tennessee and moved
to Washington, DC where she became an aide to a United States Senator
on Capitol Hill. But, her creative side called and she began to
pursue acting and theater professionally, and left for Paris, France
to study drawing and French at the Parson’s School.
Kaye’s creative pursuits led inevitably to New York where
she honed her acting and art world skills and connections while
appearing numerous times on the hit television series Saturday Night
Live. During her years as a professional actress in New York and
then Los Angeles, she continued her interest and pursuit in art,
from creating, to collecting, to selling.
Her passionate pursuit of photography began in 1990 with the birth
of her son Walker, her muse, and accelerated several years later
when she began a collaborative friendship with the noted New York
fashion photographer and commercial director James (Jimmy) Moore.
Moore, considered one of the most accomplished photographers in
the U.S., mentored Kaye in the development of her photographic eye
and her emphasis on black & white fine art portraiture. Moore
also suggested the thematically linked photo project that became
her extensive folio entitled Old Friends which has seen Kaye crisscross
the country photographing nearly 100 people who have been most important
in her life.
Kaye has shot fine art portraiture for a variety of clients, and
her photos have also appeared in national magazines. She had her
own darkroom built and mastered the art and mechanics of developing
and printing her own photos. Lately she has been swept along in
the photographic world’s shift to digital, spending more time
with computers, software, scanners and printers. But she still enjoys
shooting with her classic cameras, especially a 1953 Rolleiflex,
one of the best ever made, a favorite of Jimmy’s as well as
former Life photographer Jack Birns, who took Kaye under his wing
two years ago.
In 2004 Kaye wrote, directed, produced and acted in the award-winning
short film Betty’s Treats, a 1950’s comic love tale
with a twist. Details at www.bettystreatsmovie.com.
